Day 13

Dear Stylelife Challenger,

Here is your Stylelife Challenge Assignment for July 13th.

Today is…BOOKSTORE DAY.

First, print out the following calendar covering the rest of the month of July:

Stylelife Calendar

Then go to a bookstore, preferably one with a café or sitting area. You should bring the PDF calendar above, something to write with, and, if you’ve been keeping one, your journal.

You are going to perform the following tasks there.

TASK 1

Pick up a copy of a local events guide. This can be a free weekly newspaper (like the LA Weekly); a magazine-style going-out guide (like Time Out); or a daily newspaper. You may also want to grab a local Zagat's guide to restaurants and/or nightlife. Since you're not going to be leaving the bookstore with these, you don't need to pay for them.

TASK 2

Pick up a copy of Cosmopolitan Magazine.

TASK 3

Sit somewhere comfortably in the store, preferably the café, and look through the listings and reviews in the paper or magazine you picked up in Task 1.

Take out your calendar and insert an event, restaurant, concert, gallery, reading, flea market, or other activity to try for each day of the week in the box on the left of each day. The simpler and cheaper the activity, the better. Free events are always good. Make sure it is something you are able to attend (not a concert that’s sold out or a restaurant that’s out of your budget).

In the larger area on the right side of the calendar, write one or two sentences convincing someone why they should go to the event.

TASK 4

Read Cosmopolitan front to back.

In addition to noting that women are just as desperate and insecure as men, find an interesting topic of conversation inspired by an article, column, letter, or advertisement.

When you find that topic, comment on it to a woman seated nearby or walking past. Show her the story in the magazine. Make sure your delivery is casual and spontaneous, as if you were just struck by something you read and can't help but share it.

If she listens and responds favorably, then congratulate yourself. You have just generated your own spontaneous routine.

If she listens but does not respond favorably, keep reading and find another interesting topic. Repeat with a different woman.

If she asks you why you’re reading Cosmopolitan, tell her that a girlfriend recommended reading it to learn more about women. If you can't find anything in Cosmopolitan, you may try US Weekly (or an equivalent celebrity gossip magazine) afterward.

There is no need to continue the conversation beyond the Cosmopolitan discussion, but if she is enjoying the interaction, feel free to continue it using one of your Stylelife openers, personal stories, or disqualifiers.

Repeat this exercise until you either have one positive response or you've talked to five women -- whichever comes first.

When you return home, add the story about Cosmopolitan magazine that you successfully used today to your Stories To Tell list. Feel free to share the routine and your field report in the Challenge Discussion forum.

BONUS

Congratulations for making it through Day 13 and for pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. As a small gift, here's a pocket storytelling cheat sheet to help you review yesterday’s tasks:
